Jahangir's World Times (JWT): Please tell us about your educational background.
Umer Farooq Aziz (UFA): I hold a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the UET, Lahore. Currently, I am pursuing a Master's in Process Engineering.
JWT: How long did it take you to prepare for Industrial Development Officer exam?
UFA: My preparation journey has been long and continuous. In my opinion, one-paper examination preparation can be effectively completed within six months. During this period, an aspirant can comprehensively cover all major areas required for the exam.
JWT: What were your principal sources for the preparation for this exam?
UFA: My principal resources were past papers, relevant books and the internet—particularly reliable web pages for conceptual clarity and updated information.
For General Knowledge, I relied on the World Times Publications’ General Knowledge book along with selected one-liner books, which also helped me in quick revision.
JWT: How was Jahangir's World Times magazine helpful during your preparations?
UFA: World Times magazine improved my ability to answer questions in a balanced, mature and policy-oriented manner.
JWT: How was your experience at the World Times Institute?
UFA: The WTI was very helpful in building a structured understanding and interview-oriented knowledge. The comprehensive lectures, issue-based discussions and exam-focused content enabled me to link theory with real-world developments.
JWT: How should the new aspirants start preparations for the various one-paper exams?
UFA: New aspirants should start by clearly understanding the nature of the exam and interview requirements. Consistent reading of quality newspapers, following credible analytical platforms and gradually developing opinion-based answers is the right way to begin.
JWT: What areas should they focus on?
UFA: They should focus on current affairs, Pakistan's economic and industrial issues, governance and basic knowledge related to their applied post.
JWT: What is, in your opinion, an ideal timetable for a sound preparation?
UFA: An ideal timetable should be realistic and consistent rather than rigid. Daily newspaper reading, regular revision of notes and answer practice using AI tools or self-questioning should be part of routine study.
JWT: What strategy should the in-job aspirants adopt as they have scant time at their disposal?
UFA: In-job aspirants should focus on quality rather than quantity. Short but focused daily study sessions, regular newspaper reading and weekend revision are highly effective.
JWT: How did you handle the interview pressure while before the panel?
UFA: I handled interview pressure by staying calm and treating the interview as a professional discussion rather than an interrogation.
JWT: On the basis of your experience, what tips you would give to the prospective aspirants?
UFA: Based on my experience, I would say consistency and smart preparation are the keys to success. Use multiple resources but integrate them into a personalized strategy. Stay updated through quality newspapers, utilize AI tools wisely, watch and analyse mock interviews and keep refining your answers. Confidence, clarity and continuous learning ultimately make the difference.
