Summary. On March 10, Pakistan made a significant move towards expanding its digital infrastructure, and enabling the rollout of next-generation connectivity and technologies by holding the long-awaited 5G spectrum auction that fetched USD 507 million. The move is expected to dramatically improve the quality and capacity of existing 3G and 4G networks while enabling telecom operators to begin rolling out 5G services. Although authorities deserve recognition for completing an auction, the true success of this moment, however, will not be measured in megahertz sold, but in how effectively Pakistan translates this spectrum into reliable connectivity, wider digital inclusion and meaningful economic growth.
