Boosting the Livestock Sector

In July last year, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) recommended that Pakistan should adopt Brazil's agricultural model, which transformed the country from a victim of food insecurity to a global food exporter through innovation and research. Today, Brazil is internationally recognized as a global leader in livestock production, meat processing, dairy development and agri-food exports. The country has the world's largest commercial cattle herd, exceeding 230 million heads and is the largest exporter of beef and poultry. Brazil's remarkable success offers many lessons for Pakistan, a country that has huge potential to become one of the biggest exporters of meat and dairy products obtained from the livestock sector. Even the global halal market for the livestock products, including milk, meat and poultry products, is around $200 billion.
